BLOG: Blog v Wiki

In today's age of New Media a plethora of tools are available to communicate, store, and present information across the wold wide web. Blogs and Wiki pages have been at the forefront of this notion. However, often times there is confusion and overlap between the two and their individual goals and purposes. To be frank a blog is created usually from the perspective of an individual or group and that party presenting it's ideas, thoughts, and news via this platform. On the other hand, a Wiki page is to be utilized to hold information, history, useful links, and general knowledge about a specific subject. Wiki pages and blogs can also be used within organizations to communicate and hold information related to specific processes and functions. It is important to note an important quirk of a wiki page is the fact that often times any individual can come and edit the information, this fact is still true for the most part. However, recently CNN posted an article titled "Wikipedia: No Longer the Wild West?" in which it's mentioned how "it will try assigning editors to some of it's entries". This will limit the amount of information which can be edited and also build a stronger brand for wiki pages in general. Overall, the need for governance and security among blogs and wiki pages has been a concern for years, but there have been a few cases where the lack of authorization and access has actually caused some good. In the New York Times article "Brooklyn Blog Help Leads to Drug Raid" details can be found on how neighbors conversing about the activity within their neighborhoods aided law enforcement in capturing drug dealers and users. The future of these platforms is immense especially in today's era of smartphones, tablets, and smart home devices. Be connected is being knowledgeable.

  1. Hi Jatinder!
I really enjoyed reading your post. You described the differences and similarities of wikis and blogs beautifully. You mentioned the article posted by CNN where there was talk about wiki possibly assigning editors to some pages...there are people who think that by doing that you are losing the meaning of wiki pages simply because wiki was created as a site with complete freedom to edit anything you wanted to edit. Do you agree with editors being assigned to some wiki pages?

Creativity and New Media

In this post you will find my personalized Bitmoji! This software allows me to create my own personal avatar that I can use on Snapchat, iMessage, and other platforms. It has been fully customized from all the features of my face and body to the clothes I wear. Certain software also allows users to create unique stickers such as the Halloween themed one in this post. I would highly recommend all individuals to create a Bitmoji and express themselves in their own unique ways!

Blog: Wiki So Far

I have thoroughly enjoyed working through the New Media Wiki so far. I have focused my efforts on the Real Estate topic and have added five paragraphs in regards to how an agent should help a buyer in the process of purchasing a home. I have added multiple links and photos within each section. Furthermore, I look to focus now on editing content of my peers and seeing how I can ensure their hyperlinks, photos, and other links function correctly. Along with that, I may look to add more detail into the real estate section in regards to what a seller may expect from an agent and the entire process. All in all, my wiki experience has been positive and I have learned a lot about how to apply new media concepts to daily topics in life.

Blog: Privacy

Privacy and confidentiality are concepts which are day by day becoming more and more important to creators and consumers of new media. Applications such as Tik Tok have become such influential companies in their simplistic app which has gained so much popularity they have simultaneously become infamous for their security and data privacy concerns. Keeping user data safe is an essential and given responsibility of any new media company. Furthermore, cyber security in general as an industry is rapidly growing. More and more hackathons or popping up across high school and university campuses, new and improved programs in cyber security are being developed each year, and organizations throughout the globe are bulking up their security training and strategies. Privacy is a growing concerns regardless if it a user's data on Facebook or the ability to hack into a local business's website and access data from there.
